We live in an age of hyperbole. If I don’t like something, it is toxic. If I don’t like someone, they are a Nazi. Every description it seems has to go to the extremes, just to prove that I don’t like whatever.
Before I read the book “In the Garden of Beasts“, I threw around terms like “Grammar Nazi” and others. After I finished that book, I made an oath to myself that I would never compare anyone to a Nazi ever again. Until I read that book, I honestly did not understand the depth of the depravity of what went on.
Terms like “Grammar Nazi” do nothing but normalize the word Nazi and help us forget what that one specific group of people did in that one specific timeframe.
Words mean things. If we overuse our strongest words, they lose their meaning, and their impact.
Choose your words carefully because Words mean things.
