Lead by example

Dear Reader,

“A leader is not an administrator who loves to run others, but someone who carries water for his people so that they can get on with their jobs.”

–Robert Townsend

Great leaders are not great because they are efficient administrators. They are great leaders because the motivate their followers to do something great.

Many times, motivation is’t rousing speeches or epic emails; many times motivation is carrying water for the team so the team can focus on the task at hand.

On one team I built, around 9:30 many mornings, I would make a pot of coffee and then carry a tray of coffee and fxin’s around to each team member to make sure they had a fresh cup.

I had other tasks that had to get done. This 30 minute task meant that I probably was skipping lunch to get everything done.

That was ok though. I wanted the team to understand that there was no task too small or insignificant for them to tackle. I wanted them to understand that we all had to pull together and do whatever was necessary t do the job.

I could not think of a motivational speech that could convey my message better than me serving coffee to everyone every day.

Until next time,
