I think the worst advice that my generation has given those that have followed us is this.
“If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life”
“Follow your passion”
I’m guilty of perpetuating this myth because I’m lucky enough to do something I enjoy, writing software.
It may be that you are a gifted accountant but really enjoy singing. That’s fine. It’s ok to be an accountant by day and pursue your passion for singing in your off hours.
Everybody needs to find a vocation that they can live with and not be miserable. It doesn’t have to be your passion it just has to not make you sad.
If you are lucky enough to be able to make a living pursuing your passion, understand that we are part of a small group that are so blessed. Just because it is working for us doesn’t mean it will work for others.
These days I tell people:
“Find a vocation you can be happy with, and find an avocation that makes you happy.”
…and I try really hard not to brag that I’ve got both in one task. :)
Until next time,
