I often talk about standing on the shoulders of giants. I don’t always mean the people that developed the tools I use day to day to get my job done. I stand on the shoulders of the people who reached down, helped my up and then helped me climb onto their shoulders. I know my giants, managers and mentors who have helped me through the years.
What are you doing to lift the next generation of programmers onto your shoulders? Do you speak at user groups, camps or conferences? Do you volunteer at boot camps for those that want to break into the industry? Have you hired a Jr based on nothing but their potential and given them the chance to become a programmer?
None of us got here solely by our own efforts, all of us owe a debt to the previous generation. It is up to each of us to to pay that debt by helping the next generation get to the point where they can stand on our shoulders.
Until next time,
